Officers with smuggling links to be identified

29 Apr, 2007

The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) is preparing a list of customs officials, who are involved in smuggling of goods in connivance with the organised gangs. It is learnt on Saturday that issue was discussed in the last collectors' conference to chalk out a comprehensive anti-smuggling strategy.
The anti-smuggling data would also take into account major cases of smuggling, officers involved and action taken against them. It would specify that whether high ranking or low-grade officers are involved helping smugglers.
The data would also pinpoint stations where smuggling has been considerably high along with the suspected officials involved in this activity particularly at the border areas. This data would be made part of the overall anti-smuggling strategy to effectively deal with the issue.
Sources said that the committee comprising Directorate General Intelligence and Investigation, Collectors of Customs, Peshawar/Quetta, Collector (Preventive), Karachi and CBR Chief Customs would submit recommendations to control smuggling.
