Customs officer sacked

The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has dismissed from services Syed Ejaz Hussain, a BS-20 officer of Customs and Excise Group, on the charges of corruption. According to a notification issued on Saturday, Ejaz was arrested in the Accountability Court, Lahore, on February 16, 2006 under National Accountability Ordinance, 1999.
He entered into a plea bargain with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) under which Rs 7,147,953 was paid by the accused officer. Later he was released. Under Removal from Services (Special Powers) Ordinance, 2000 and with the approval of the Prime Minister, a show-cause notice was served on him, which was not replied by the accused officer within the prescribed period.
Keeping in view the conviction of the accused officer by the court on the charges of corruption, it was recommended that major penalty of 'dismissal from service' may be imposed upon him. The prime minister granted personal hearing on February 21, 2007 in the Prime Minister's Secretariat, while the accused did not attend the hearing.
He after considering facts of the case has imposed major penalty of 'dismissal from service' upon him from July 31, 2006 ie the date of conviction by the accountability court. Ejaz shall have a right to appeal to the appellate authority within a period of 15 days from the date of communication of this notification.
