International Labour Day May 1 will be observed world-wide on Tuesday to commemorate the historic struggle and efforts of working people. The origin of May Day was bound up with the struggle for the shorter workday - a demand of major political significance for the working class. The movement was started with the fight for an eight-hour workday.
However, in 1884, the Federation of Organised Trades and Labour Unions passed a resolution stating that eight hours would constitute a legal day's work from and after May 1, 1886.
With workers being forced to work ten, twelve, and fourteen hours a day, rank-and-file support for the eight-hour movement grew rapidly, despite the indifference and hostility of many union leaders.
The heart of the movement was in Chicago, organised primarily by the anarchist International Working People's Association for social and economic uplift of the working class as well as importance of labour movement.
Besides other part of the globe, the international workers' day will be also observed in the country to highlight the struggle of working force and their role for the development of the country.
The day will also pay tributes to Chicago martyrs of 1886 who had laid down their lives for the cause of labour community. To mark the day with befit manners, Minister of Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis, its concerned departments, Labour Unions and Federations and NGOs would arrange rallies in the different part of the country.
Pakistan Television, private channels and Radio Pakistan will arrange special programmes, while, special editions of national and local newspapers will be published on the occasion.
