Message from Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs and Statistics

04 May, 2007

During the last few years, Pakistan's economy has rapidly transformed into a high growth and dynamic economy. It is a result of consistent policies that Pakistan has achieved this landmark success and has also been successful in modernising its tax culture by implementing far reaching Tax Administration Reforms, tailored to meet the needs of the tax payers and the economy.
CBR rightly deserves appreciation in playing a leading role in devising and implementing policies for revolutionising the investment climate in Pakistan by winning the trust of the tax payer.
Government liberal and business friendly policies are part of its extended reform agenda. These efforts would prove futile without reforming the prevailing taxation system. So we not only must formulate investment friendly policies but also continue to reform our system and tax culture.
In the past, there was generally a lack of trust between the taxpayers and the tax collectors. But now for the first time in Pakistan with the implementation of universal self assessment system a growing understanding and mutual trust is being established between the tax collectors and tax payers. This will definitely promote the tax compliance culture.
The National Conference on Tax Administration Reforms Programme will help us to explore new vistas for better governance of the tax reforms and realise even better understanding between the stakeholders. The deliberations will also help to educate the tax payers about Government's Taxation Policies.
I congratulate CBR on introducing a modern, integrated and business-friendly tax system in Pakistan which is contributing toward progress and prosperity of Pakistan. I would also like to extend my congratulations on successfully holding the National Conference on Tax Administration Reform Programme that will contribute in building a better future for our country.
