Swiss franc eyes lows

19 May, 2007

The Swiss franc eyed fresh lows against the euro on Friday as recent warnings from Swiss central bankers against risk of a sudden re-appreciation failed to support the Swiss currency.
Swiss National Bank Chairman Jean-Pierre Roth said in an interview the weak franc did not reflect Switzerland's strong economic fundamentals and pointed the risk of a re-appreciation. The franc was near flat against the euro at 1.6554 per euro, only a hair's breadth off the 8-1/2 year low at 1.6559 hit on Thursday.
Against the dollar, the franc was down 0.1 percent at 1.2276 per dollar as strong US economic data supported the greenback. The franc has been under pressure for months despite strong economic data and low inflation as investors borrow the franc to investments in higher-yielding currencies in carry trades, benefiting from Switzerland's low interest rates.
