26 May, 2007

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday put off the proceedings in the same sex couple case and directed the counsel of Shumail Raj (Nazia) to submit reply of the notices by May 28, which has been fixed as next date of hearing.
The court also directed the police to produce Dr Asif of Faisalabad who operated upon Shumail Raj (Nazia) about 10 years ago. On Friday, Surgeon Abdul Hafeez Kardar, who had operated Shumail Raj appeared before the court and informed that he had not operated upon the feminine organs of Shumail Raj rather he stated that he had helped as an assistant to the gynaecologist during the operation.
During the course of proceedings, Shumail Raj told that he got himself operated 10 years ago by one Dr Asif of Faisalabad, on which, the court directed the police to present the said doctor also on the next hearing on May 28. The honourable judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC) while hearing the case also remarked that such a case never happened in the sub-continent earlier and it has to be taken to its logical end.
Earlier, when the court took up the hearing of the case on Friday, the counsel of Shumail Raj (Nazia) told the court that the notices served to him on the previous hearing, could not be replied, as the jail officials had not allowed him to meet Shumail Raj. Upon this, the court observed that you do not want to reply, if you desired to meet Shumail, then you could have requested the court for the same also. The court, thereafter, directed the lawyer of Shumail Raj to submit the reply of the notices on May 28.
