One portion of I I Chundrigar Road-from Tower to Habib Bank Plaza- has been opened for traffic after completion of re-construction work on it. The rest of the work on the road will be completed in four months as promised before, said the City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal.
While talking to media on the occasion of opening of the newly re-constructed portion of the road and initiation of the work on the other portion here on Sunday, a statement said here. He said a system of storm water drain is also being laid next to the road while the beautification aspect has been ensured to be kept in view. The Nazim said that the project, which normally could have taken one and a half year to complete, would be finished in a record time of four months.
He said I I Chundrigar road is a very important artery of the country and work is being carried out on it on war-footing to make it a model road.
Along with the opening of one portion of the road, sewerage system of old areas of the city including Kharadar is also being restored, he pointed out. The Nazim said that work on the road had not been undertaken from the last 40 years and due to non-existence of storm water drain, rain water up to several feet remained standing on the road during the rainy season.
This posed difficulty to the workers of important offices of the country, including the head offices of banks and offices of print and electronic media. That is why the road remained centre of attention during the rainy season, Mustafa Kamal pointed out.
He said despite all the hurdles, the difficult decision of undertaking re-construction of this road had been made. The banks situated along this road contributed Rs220 million for the construction of the road while the rest would be provided by the CDGK.
"The work is being carried out 24 hours a day and we will set another example of completing this project in a record period of time," the City Nazim said.
He said special security and traffic arrangements would be made on I I Chundrigar with the installation of IT based cameras on the road.
