Aga Khan University (AKU) will host a two-day seminar on 'English and Empowerment to the Developing World' on June 9 and 10, 2007. Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Science and Technology and Chairman Higher Education Commission, will be the chief guest on the occasion.
AKU's Centre of English Language has organised the seminar with the objective of addressing issues related to the critical role of English language and empowerment. Sub-themes of the seminar include English in the global perspective, links between English language and employment, economic factors in language planning, language and gender, politics in language teaching, language and culture, English for specific purposes, teacher education, ICT and language education, and cross cultural communication.
Researchers and teachers involved in various aspects of ELT will share their experiences, challenges and research critique new ideas and approaches: and establish links with other universities teaching English in Pakistan and abroad.
Eminent ELT experts from Pakistan and abroad who will be participating include from Pakistan: Dr Tariq Rehman, Ghazi Salahuddin, and Faisal Karim Siddiqi; Iran: Dr Bahman Gorjian; UAE: Ms Hazel Owen; India: Professor Maya Pandit; and UK: Dr Edith M. Esch, Tony Wright, Dr Richard Smith and Graham Hall.
