Increase in wheat crop attributed to better government policies

Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Livestock Sikandar Hayat Bosan on Monday praised the government's efforts to enhance agriculture sector, and said that the record increase in wheat crop was due to better policies of the government.
Speaking in a PTV programme, he applauded the government, and said that its efforts had raised the cotton output from only 10 million bales to nearly 14 million bales. The minister said the government was taking effective measures to promote livestock as 35 million population in rural areas directly or indirectly depended on this sector.
He said that livestock share in the agriculture sector was about 50 percent and had significant role in contributing gross domestic product (GDP), adding that socio-economic uplift could not be achieved without promoting livestock and agriculture sectors.
Sikandar Bosan said that the government was promoting livestock in the country as it was job-oriented sector and vast population in rural areas depended on it for their livelihood. Besides, this sector had great potential to attract foreign investment as well, he added. The minister said the government's policy was to make the agriculture sector profitable in any condition, as agriculture was the backbone of the country's economy.
