Wheat exporters in a fix over government indecision

07 Jun, 2007

The private sector is in a fix over wheat export policy as the government has not yet disclosed its line of action about export commitments of wheat, sources told Business Recorder.
The government had directed the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), customs authorities and the private sector to submit their details about LCs to know the quantity of wheat booked for export.
"Even after the submission of details of our LCs, the government has done nothing", an exporter of wheat said. The private sector exporters have made some commitments with foreign wheat buyers. They will have to lose market share if the government does not let it export the committed quantity of wheat.
"We fear that in case the government does not let us meet all our commitments, we will have to face losses in the form of heavy fines", another wheat exporter said. Another exporter said, "The government should be quick in taking decision on the issue, otherwise we will suffer a lot".
