LAHORE: Pakistan is celebrating the 25th anniversary of 1992 World Cup victory on Saturday. On this day Pakistan defeated England in the final by 22 runs to lift the trophy for the very first time.

The Green-Shirts were on the verge of getting eliminated from the tournament at one stage, ended up as world champions after witnessing many ups and downs throughout the event.

At one stage rain affected the group match which proved to be the most significant for the 1992 champions, as it saved Imran Khan’s boys from getting knocked out from the tournament.

Pakistan were invincible afterwards in all the eliminators as they brushed aside all odds to conquer the world.

It was the historic day of March 25, 1992 when Pakistan thrashed England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) by 22 runs with the help of skipper Imran Khan’s brilliant knock of 72 runs despite shoulder injury.

The man in green set England the target of 250 after winning the toss. Mushtaq Ahmed and Wasim Akram made it impossible for the English men.

Mushtaq picked up three wickets for 41 runs while Akram delivered two miracles back to back deliveries to send Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis packing.

Akram also ended up with three wickets and was declared man of the match for his game-changing spell. Skipper Imran Khan retired from cricket after making his side the world champions.
