Kotri Barrage Chief Engineer Irrigation, Manzoor Ahmed Shaikh has announced that rotation programme at the barrage would be enforced from July 11, 2007 due to shortage of water in River Indus.
In a press release issued here on Saturday, Shaikh said that due to low temperature in Northern Areas, the water flow conditions at all the rim stations had reduced considerably, which resulted in short fall in upstream discharge at the Kotri Barrage Headworks.
He said that the short fall was expected from 25 percent to 30 percent, adding that this situation would persist for 20 days. He said the Kharif requirement for four off-taking canals of Kotri Barrage, viz Kalri Baghar Feeder on the right side and Old Puleli (Pinyari) Canal, New Puleli and Akram Wah on the left side, was around 37,000 cusecs but due to less availability of water it had become difficult to meet.
In this situation, he said, the management of Kotri Barrage had been compelled to enforce the rotation programme in the system to manage the equitable distribution of available water supplies. The chief engineer said that detailed rotation programme was being notified by the concerned executive engineers separately.
He also urged upon all the growers of Kotri Barrage command to co-operate with the Irrigation Department to minimise the wastage of water through their efficient utilisation of available water.
