US team visits University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences

A five-member delegation from the US State Department led by Dr Jason E Rao, Senior Program Co-ordinator of the US Department of State, visited the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore and held a meeting with vice-chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz and senior faculty members, here on Thursday.
The vice-chancellor briefed the delegation about the academic, research, development and extension activities of the university. He said that the UVAS was initiating new programs keeping in view the market needs in the areas of microbiology, bio-informatics, dairy technology, fisheries, vaccinology and MBA in Life Sciences.
He said that low productivity of animals, deficient feed resources, re-emerging diseases and lack of facilities for marketing and value addition were main constraints in livestock sectors. The VC said the UVAS had developed in collaboration with many national and international institutions to improve the quality of education.
Showing their interest in various field the US delegation said that their focus was in the field of bio-security and bio-safety. Both the sides agreed to hold more meetings to identify the areas of collaboration for mutual benefits. The delegation, also visited the WTO-Quality Control Lab and other laboratories of the UVAS.
The Institute of Continuing Education and Extension of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore arranged a two-week Teacher Orientation Program for the training of the university faculty.
Speaking on the occasion, the vice-chancellor said this orientation program was arranged for the education of educators to empower the young faculty of the university. He said that the participants would be trained in latest research techniques and communication skills.
Earlier, Institute of Continuing Education and Extension Director Professor Dr Zafar lqba1 presented the welcome address and spoke about the activities of the institute. About 30 faculty members from the UVAS, the University of Health Sciences, the Government College for Women University, the King Edward Medical University and the GC University Lahore are attending the orientation program. This training program will conclude on June 29.
