Partly Facetious: what's there in name change

15 Jun, 2007

"Such a major change..."
"Where did this change take place? As far as I can see things are pretty much the same. Status quo everywhere I see."
"That depends on where you are sitting, I guess. On one side you cannot but be enamoured by the momentous change..."
"And on the other?"
"Be skeptical like you are being."
"May I know what you are referring to?"
"Let me give you a small hint. The major change I am referring to has to do with name change."
"Who changed his or her name? Will BB prefer to be referred to as Ms Zardari or is Mr Sharif going to be referred to as Mr Kulsoom?"
"It's not a person."
"What name change then?"
"A post..."
"Will we refer to the Prime Minister as the President and the President as the..."
"I apologise - what I meant was an institution has decided to change its name to something much more spectacular."
"Will we refer to the Cabinet as the Parliament? This may do wonders for democracy in this country."
"Don't be facetious."
"Then what in the world are you referring to?"
"The Central Board of Revenue will now be referred to as the Federal Board of Revenue."
"What good will that do?"
"Enhance tax collection?"
"How?"
"I am not sure but that is what FBR argues."
"And it will increase employment."
"How?"
"Imagine how many CBR signs will have to be repainted as FBR."
"May I suggest something?"
"Yes."
"Can we change the name to Federal Revenue Bureau."
"Why?"
"It will further increase employment - all three letters will have to be changed then."
"I see - good idea."
