19 Jun, 2007

Acting Governor NWFP Mr Justice Tariq Pervez Khan Monday paid surprise visits to Peshawar Airport and Central Prison Peshawar. At the Airport the Governor mixed up with the people present in the lounge, who apprised him of their problems and grievances as well as the state of public facilities.
It was brought to the notice of the Governor that entry to Airport had been restricted and made subject to payment of entry fee. The Governor also visited the parking lot besides taking stock of the overall security arrangements.
Later the Acting Governor called a meeting of the Airport officials in the office of the Airport Manager to discuss the public complaints and problems. The Air Port Manager and head of Airport Security Force briefed the Governor about the security and other arrangements and said that public entry had been restricted in wake of the security environment.
The Governor while approving the need for adequate security arrangements stressed that such arrangement should not cause unnecessary trouble to the people, who visit the Airport to receive and see off their near and dear. He said that the decision regarding imposition of entry fee also required a review to remove the public grievances and reduce their difficulties. He stressed the need for facilitating the visitors rather than putting them in trouble.
Later the Governor also paid unscheduled visit to the Central Prison and went round various portions including the hospital, male and female lock-ups and welfare shop. While inspecting the hospital, the Governor talked to the prisoners, patients and queried about the available medical facilities.
He directed the medical staff to look after the ailing prisoners properly. The Acting Governor also visited the female portion of the prison and talked to the women detainees about the legal status of their cases.
The governor issued instructions to expedite the appointment of a lady doctor in the prison hospital. During the jail visit, the Governor was told about the difficulty, faced by the prisoners in getting computerised identity cards. He assured that the Nadra authorisers would be approached to make necessary arrangements in this regard.
