Wapda to buy power from new IPPs: Tariq

Wapda Chairman Tariq Hameed on Thursday said that Wapda had decided to buy electricity from new Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to overcome the shortage of power in the country.
Addressing the members of the Quaid-e-Azam Industrial Estate (QIE) Board during his visit to the Industrial Estate here on Thursday, he said that load shedding could aggravate if immediate measures were not adopted to start construction of Kalabagh dam. Wapda has already granted permission to the private sector to set up power stations and was ready to purchase electricity from them, he added.
The Wapda chief also said that a huge amount had been allocated in the budget for electricity and the expansion project of Mangla Dam would be completed next year. He hoped that by 2016 all mega projects would be completed keeping in view the fast increasing electricity demand the construction of Kalabagh dam is absolutely necessary.
He also accepted the demand of area industrialists regarding load shedding in the industrial estate during day times. He said that a new notification about load shedding in the industrial estate after 6:00 pm would be issued soon.
