Memon would grab PPIB managing director post

03 Jul, 2007

Yousaf Memon, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Water and Power, will take additional charge of Managing Director, Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB), in the second week of July, it is learnt reliably. The incumbent Managing Director, Khalid Irfan Rehman, has resigned from his office, citing personal reasons.
According to sources, Memon, who is considered very close to Minister for Water and Power, Liaquat Ali Jatoi, sent a summary to the Prime Minister for taking additional charge as MD, PPIB, in the absence of new Secretary Ismail Qureshi.
"Qureshi was out of the country when Memon made this move by managing a summary in close consultation with the Minister for Water and Power," the sources maintained.
The sources said Ismail Qureshi, who came from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal), is not interested in the Ministry of Water and Power as he is reportedly making efforts to become Secretary Finance vice Tanwir Ali Agha, who has recently replaced Yunis Khan, Auditor General of Pakistan.
Memon is already the head of Policy Implementation Cell (PIC) of the ministry. He is also on the board of Nespak. The sources said that private sector investors were not likely to welcome any bureaucrat as PPIB Managing Director because of his unfriendly attitude.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has already directed the PPIB for fifty per cent representation of private sector on the board so that investors' interest was not be hurt by the bureaucracy.
