Customs Intelligence, Faisalabad, has busted a gang, which was busy in embezzling customs and other government duties, and seized 6 import containers, which were brought to Faisalabad and Lahore from Port Qasim, Karachi, without payment of customs duty amounting to millions of rupees.
Muhammad Asif Hargan, Deputy Collector, Customs Intelligence, Faisalabad Region, said here on Tuesday that the modus operandi of the gang members was that they managed to smuggle out import containers from Port Qasim, Karachi, without payment of customs duty and other dues and without customs clearance.
They used to put the T P in the Customs Care System at Karachi, showing different Dry Ports as their destination of delivery, and later they disposed of these import goods in the local market.
He said that the members of this gang had also moved three more import containers from some private premises of Karachi without payment of customs duty which are expected to be seized soon as the Custom Intelligence was following them on a tip-off.
He said total embezzled amount of customs duty and other dues on these 9 import containers was around Rs 40 million. Asif said that it was pertinent to note that the members of this gang used to download the data of Pakistan Revenue Automation Ltd (Pral) and after showing fictitious name of importer and goods carrier, they hoodwinked the officials and deprived the Customs Department of a sizeable amount.
He said that one Malik Faisal Awan, resident of Chakwal, was the ringleader of this gang. Raids were being conducted to apprehend other members of this gang.
