New electricity meters

13 Jul, 2007

Nowadays, without any prior notice to consumers, KESC is replacing old serviceable electricity meters by new meters, which are alleged to be pre-engineered fast in function as experienced by general consumers who have already fallen victim of this high-handedness of KESC.
The process of meter change consumes 8-10 hours of sudden power cut. This pain, under sweating heat is being thrusted upon consumers by KESC, in addition to their on-going curb of frequent loadshedding.
As per the terms and conditions of contract for electric supply between KESC and consumer, either party is legally bound to communicate the intended change of meter prior to its replacement for any reason, which KESC has failed to comply and is changing meters arbitrarily.
The new plastic meters manufactured by a company in Lahore, purchased a few years back in a suspected deal, were found faulty, unworthy and lying useless in KESC stores. However, the KESC officials involved in meters purchase deal, in order to save their neck from accountability of this huge financial deficit, forced bulk installation of meters in haphazard and disorganised manner. KESC staff engaged on the job of replacement of meters, leave bunch of wires in over the meters.
The bunch of loose (-) negative and (+) positive wires in close contact, can spark and may cause fire, resulting in a big disaster leading to loss of life in residential areas, as already happened in some areas of Karachi.
The KESC technicians deployed on job of meter change do not listen to the consumers' pleas and no KESC engineer bothers to monitor the work professionally, ensure safety measures and resolve consumer's problems owing to meter change, before leaving the spot. In the whole process of meter replacement, the required safety standards are not fulfilled, posing danger to the lives of consumers. The concerned officials are requested to arrange proper fixation of loose electric wires to ensure safety.
