Four billion people living in polluted areas world over: study

18 Jul, 2007

Pakistan needs to build a technological framework that allows them to observe and model human-natural systems interactions at relevant spatial and temporal scales, identify problem, provide solutions, facilitate implementation and monitor effectiveness.
Research Scientist at National Space Science and Technology Centre (NSSTC), Nasa Dr Maudood Khan stated this, while delivering a special lecture on 'effect of urbanisation on urban climate and air pollution' held here on Tuesday.
Dr Maudood Khan maintained that about four billion people are estimated to be living in polluted areas around the world and human settlements are the most visible source of 'forcing, affecting land, water and air.'
To evolve a comprehensive strategy to combat climate and air pollution hazards, he pledged to engage with communities through non-governmental organisations and business. He further said that the world is intuitively weaving itself into networks. Dr Maudood called for developing data products and modelling tools that enable communities to study past changes to earth-system that relevant to the community and analyse their development choices.
Earlier, Director Sustainable Development Study Centre of GCU Dr Amin-ul-Haq talked about the objectives of lecture series being conducted by the SDSC and thereafter invited the guest speaker to make his lecture presentation.
