A total of 5,740 watercourses have been lined in the year 2006-07 under National Programme for Improvement of Watercourses (NIPW) in all 23 districts of Sindh.
The officials of the Programme Monitoring Unit, NPIW Sindh, on Wednesday informed that lining of watercourses was one of the mega projects in water sector, which was initiated in the year 2004 with the task of lining of 33,000 watercourses in all 23 districts of the province with an estimated cost of Rs 22 billion.
During the year 2006-07, the Programme Monitoring Unit NIPW Sindh has officially set the task of the lining of 5,000 watercourses in the province with an estimated amount of six billion rupees.
The lining of watercourses is being carried out in Dadu, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Matiari, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Thatta, Karachi, Jacobabad, Kambar-Shahdadkot, Kashmore-Kandhkot, Larkana, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Ghotki, Khairpur, Nawabshah, Naushero Feroz, Shikarpur and Sukkur districts of the province.
According to statistics compiled up to June 30, the Programme Monitoring Unit NPIW Sindh has lined 5,740 watercourses in all 23 districts of the province, while 1,491 more watercourses are near to completion.
During the year 2006-07, the performance of Programme Monitoring Unit was outstanding as 740 more watercourses were lined and remaining 1,491 were near to completion against the targeted 5,000 watercourses, the officials said. The statistics revealed that the earthwork of lining of 6,299 more watercourses had also been completed, while the same work remained in progress for 1,847 watercourses in these districts.
The district wise performance of the programme revealed that in Dadu district the lining of 302 had been completed in the year 2006-07, while 109 more watercourses were under completion. The earthwork of 340 watercourses has been completed, while work remained in progress on 109 more watercourses. In Hyderabad district, 70 watercourses have been lined while work is in progress on remaining eight watercourses. The earthwork of 85 more watercourses has been completed and the same in progress on other two watercourse.
In Jamshoro district, 212 watercourses have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 24 watercourses. The earthwork of 221 more watercourses has been completed and the same in progress on 37 other watercourses. In Matiari district, 37 watercourses have been lined while work is in progress on remaining seven watercourses. The earthwork of 53 more watercourses has been completed and the same in progress on other two watercourses.
In Tando Allahyar district, 70 watercourses have been lined while work is in progress on remaining five watercourses. The earthwork of 58 more watercourses has been completed and the same in progress on other 41 watercourses.
In Tando Muhammad Khan district, 336 watercourses have been lined, while work is in progress on remaining 27 watercourses. The earthwork of 347 more watercourses has been completed and the same in progress on other 100 watercourses. In Thatta district, 601 watercourses have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 205 watercourses. The earthwork of 579 more watercourses has been completed and the same in progress on other 368 watercourses.
In Karachi, 283 watercourses have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 29 watercourses. The earthwork of 304 more watercourses has been completed and the same in progress on other 13 watercourses.
In Jacobabad district, 161 watercourses have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 83 watercourses. The earthwork of 167 more watercourses has been completed and the same in progress on other 127 watercourses.
In Kambar-Shahdadkot district, 282 watercourses have been lined while work is in progress on remaining 39 watercourses. The earthwork of 259 more watercourses has been completed and the same in progress on other 121 watercourses.
