Human organs trade: Cabinet to discuss draft ordinance

27 Jul, 2007

Federal Cabinet Secretary Masood Alam Rizvi informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that the government had prepared a draft of an ordinance to ban trade of the human organs in the country.
He said the proposed ordinance has been put on the agenda of the next meeting of the federal Cabinet most likely to be held on August 2, 2007 for its consideration.
On court notice, Cabinet Secretary Masood Alam Rizvi and Health Secretary Khushnood Akhtar Lashari appeared before the full bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. They apprised the court about the steps taken by the government to promulgate the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Ordinance, 2007, on the instructions of the Supreme Court.
The court directed the Health Secretary to take strict actions against those kidney centers involved in this trade as Pakistan has become a paradise of organs trade. The next hearing of this human rights case will be held in the first week of September 2007.
