Partly Facetious: give diplomacy a chance before Bush's war

27 Jul, 2007

"He wants to talk to Cuba and Iran and..."
"Who ever he is, must be on the US hit list."
"Actually he is an American."
"I can't believe anyone saying this in Bush's America."
"It's no longer Bush's America - the guy has only 33% rating - an all time low for any president in the second term."
"So who said this?"
"Barak Obama."
"And he wants to be elected President?"
"I think he has a chance."
"Why do you think that?"
"He is very popular."
"I thought Hillary was more so."
"True but then popularity changes over time and besides elections are not rigged in the US and."
"What about the first time Bush won?"
"You are right - Bush changed my view of US democracy so much..."
"You prefer the old democracies in old Europe, democracies Bush and his neoconservative band ridiculed at one time."
"Indeed I do but Obama I like. He has said that he wants to give diplomacy a chance and that is the direct opposite of Bush policies."
"Yes Bush always wants to give war a chance first and then use diplomatic threats to get the puppet government he installs to do exactly what he wants."
"But the insurgents are not part of the government in either Iraq or Afghanistan."
"Which is precisely where the problem comes in - it has compromised his ability to sell future wars to his people."
"Hillary Clinton and the rest of the Democratic hopefuls think Obama's idea for diplomacy is a bad one."
"Ah yes - it's politics - they think that what Americans want to hear."
"I guess our politics is the same?"
"Our politicians say what they think our people would like to hear."
"No, they say what they think Americans want to hear."
"Ah yes - that is our new and improved democracy."
