Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani Saturday said President General Pervez Musharraf would form an 'interim government' according to the constitution to hold fair, free and impartial elections.
Talking to reporters here at the Parliament House, the Information Minister said the time period of the interim government would also be decided by the President as per the rules. Replying to a question, the Minister said the formation of a government of national consensus was the jurisdiction of the parliament, adding that if any party wanted to take any step in this regard it should present the suggestion inside the parliament.
Without confirming or denying the meeting between President General Pervez Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto in Abu Dhabi, the Information Minister said there have been political contacts between the political parities at various levels.
The Minister however pointed out that spokesman of President Musharraf and Pakistan's ambassador to UAE had already denied the reported meeting.
He said political contacts were meant to promote and strengthen political and democratic institutions and were helpful in improving the situation.
Durrani said that any change would be through the ballot box in the next general elections which would be fair, free and impartial. The Information Minister said Pakistan Muslim League and its allied parties would contest the next general elections from a single platform on the basis of its performance and win the polls with majority.
He said the continuity of policies of the PML government would be an important factor in the elections. The Information Minister said public opinion should be given due importance as it is the only force to decide about their representatives.
The Minister said all the political parties would be provided level playing field in the next general elections. He however said the people were conscious and they would reject those parities and leaders who had been involved in corruption, looted the national wealth and increased debt burden of the country due to their wrong policies.
