Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) has closed down on permanent basis the 60 Megawatt Unit-I of Korangi Thermal Power Plant (KTPP) on Friday. The decision was taken as boiler of the Unit-I leaked for almost 10 times during a period of last 41 days, which resulted in the prolonged power outage in the metropolis, sources in KESC told Business Recorder.
According to sources, an acute power shortage of more than 350MW has hit the metropolis on Friday, making citizens suffer over five hours load shedding in most of the localities of the cosmopolitan city.
"The failure of KESC administration in restoring power supply from second unit of Korangi power plant is the major reason behind the ongoing electricity crisis", said the sources and added that only one unit of the plant was providing power currently. Several areas of the city as Hassan Square, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, Agrataj, Gulshan Iqbal, Sohrab Goth, Lyari, Nazimabad etc, are facing prolonged power breakdowns.
