Problems of EOBI pensioners

06 Aug, 2007

The National Bank of Pakistan has recently shifted its NBP (COD Branch) from Shahrah-e-Faisal to Rufi Shopping Mall in Block-18, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Karachi. This has indeed facilitated all residents specially those NBP account holders in general and paved opportunity for all EOBI pensioners in particular for their money transactions at a branch nearest to their resistance.
Gulistan-e-Jauhar, a hub of high-rise buildings in Karachi is spread over a total 20 blocks with population of nearly 2 millions, residing vertically in hundreds of thousands of flats as well as horizontal houses and bungalows. In the huge residency of this particular area, there are many citizens getting pensions from Employees Old Age Benefit Institution (EOBI). These pensioners include very old persons, widows, sick, disabled.
The irony is that they have to travel 25-30 kms for going out of their residence and coming back in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, for the purpose of drawing pension from the far away located NBP branches at Malir, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, PECHS, Shahrah-e-Faisal, PIDC center, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Tower, etc.
Most of the pensioners, specially widows having neither any attendant nor own transports have to undergo tremendous physical, mental and financial strain besides loss of time to draw their pensions, the only source of livelihood in the remaining days of their life.
Unfortunately, my widow mother and several other old pensioners residing in the vicinity are suffering from the same problems. Previously, there was no NBP branch in this area but since now the said NBP Branch has recently started functioning in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, its residents deserve facilitations from this branch, which can be easily done by EOBI and NBP.
In view of the above facts, Chairman EOBI is requested, on humanitarian grounds, to kindly facilitate its pensioner residents of Gulistan-e-Jauhar to conveniently draw their pensions from the NBP (COD Branch), now shifted to Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Karachi.
