No fluctuations were seen in the interbank market on Saturday as the rupee maintained its overnight levels for buying at Rs 60.43 and selling at Rs 60.45, dealers said. Supply of dollars was tight due to strong demand by the importers, they said.
In the global market yen rose sharply for the second straight day on Friday as steep declines in global equity markets prompted investors to bail out of risky trades financed by borrowing in the Japanese currency.
Equities have tumbled, government bonds have rallied, and expectations of global central bank tightening have been drastically scaled back this week amid concern that US sub-prime mortgage-related losses will spill over and choke economic growth.
