The Punjab University has announced the results of the BA and BSc annual examination 2007 and only 26.68 percent passed the exams. Out of 171,091 candidates, appeared in exams, 45,640 passed. In BSc, Madiha Manzoor of the Government College for Women, Madian Town, Faisalabad, got the first position by securing 685 marks.
Nosheen Goshi from the Queen's Mary College, Lahore, got the second position by securing 655 marks while Muhammad Ahmad from the Government Islamia College Civil Lines, Lahore, stood third by securing 652 marks.
In BA, Asma Tabassum from the Government College for Women, Jhang, securing 661 got the first position, Rabeel Shoukat external candidate Gujranwala District by securing 633 marks got the second while Sadia Ateeq from Lahore by securing 631 marks got third.
University Vice Chancellor Arshad Mahmood gave cash prizes and distinction certificates to the position holders in a ceremony held at the new campus. The overall first position holders Madiha Manzoor, BSc with 685/800, and Asima Tabassum, BA with 661 marks, were awarded cash prizes of Rs 100,000 each.
The second position holders Nosheen Goshi with 655 marks in the Science group and Rabeel Shaukat with 633 marks in the Arts group, were awarded cash prizes of Rs 75,000 each, while the third position holders Muhammad Ahmad with 652 marks in BSc and Sadia Ateeq with 631 marks in BA, were awarded cash prizes of Rs 65,000 each. They were also given distinction certificates and result cards.
The parents of position holders and Principals of the colleges concerned were awarded Punjab University shields for playing an effective role in ensuring an enabling environment and grooming their talented wards.
The vice chancellor announced that the university would bear the tuition fee and boarding expenditure of all the six position holders for any two-year post-graduate programmes of the university.
He also announced a grant of Rs 200,000 for staff of the examination branch of the Punjab University for their tireless efforts in preparing the BA/BSc result, which was declared eight days ahead of schedule.
Addressing the ceremony, Arshad Mahmood said that parents have a pivotal role in grooming children with regard to their ideals, concepts, attitudes and behaviour. He called upon the young generation to be positive in thought, speech and action. "Education is also the ability to listen to others without losing temper," he observed.
Talking about the development of the university, he mentioned that the number of faculties has increased from nine to 14, departments have raised from 43 to 68 and faculty members from 350 to 850.
Arshad further said that Pakistan's media today is enjoying the highest degree of freedom in the country's history, and that it is alive to its responsibilities. He added that hard work never goes in vain and Almighty Allah always gives reward of hard work in the shape of fame and success. He asked the parents to give special time to their children as it boosts confidence among them.
"On the second stage teacher's role is very important as role model and an influential personality for the students. He said that the faculty of Punjab University is the best faculty of Pakistan and number of PhD teachers are higher than any university in the country.
Earlier, Controller Examination Professor Dr Taqi Zahid Butt in his welcome address presented the performance report. He said that a record number of candidates appeared in the exams, which were 15,000 higher than previous year.
Registrar Punjab University Professor Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan presided over the ceremony. Punjab University will take BA/BSc supplementary examination 2007 in the third week of October. Forms could be submitted up to September 6. According to controller examination only 789 UMCs were registered in BA/BSc Annual Examination 2007 due to strict measures of Punjab University.
