University of Peshawar (UoP) and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Developments (ICIMOD) have mutually agreed to establish department of Disaster Management at Peshawar varsity in order to impart training and transfer knowledge to the faculty, students, staff of relevant departments and selected citizens about disaster risk reduction, preparedness, management and mitigation.
A meeting in this connection was held at University of Peshawar here Wednesday which was presided over by Tariq Mahmood, Director Vice Chancellor's Secretariat and attended by Dr Chaudhry Inayatullah, Director ICIMOD, and representatives of the Chemistry, Sociology, Environmental Sciences, Plant Bio Diversity, Zoology, Geography and Botany Departments of the University.
Agreement was also reached about initiation of a work to develop qualified human resource base in the subject and to serve as a catalyst in co-ordinating stakeholders for an effective and efficient response to disasters. It was also considered in the meeting that representative team from the university should pay visit to ICIMOD headquarters at Nepal on suggestions of the participants.
The participants demanded of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to sponsor it during the initial few years to establish and strengthen the Department of Disaster Management at the University of Peshawar.
