Partly Facetious: what is so important about Dr Haq

30 Aug, 2007

"Dr Anwar ul Haq..."
"Who is he? Never heard of him..."
"Let me give you a moment to ponder who he is."
"Is he a scapegoat or a target?"
"Wouldn't it be more pertinent to ask who is the puppeteer?"
"Could be the President or is it the superior judiciary or is it the exiled..."
"Rumours are getting strong that a constitutional amendment is in the works which would reduce the time of service of the superior judiciary."
"Do you think this would change anything? I mean independence is associated with the entire institution and not just one man."
"I suppose for our Lotas it is difficult to imagine that independence is throughout an institution, something which may not be quite evident in the executive if you know what I mean."
"So coming back to this Haq fellow, who is he?"
"He is a professor at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences."
"Has he done a complicated surgery in the country? I mean instead of our people going to India for surgery is it possible...?"
"Nope."
"Then what is so important about him?"
"He has indicated that he will stand up for presidential elections."
"So? He couldn't be a threat surely?"
"Apparently he is. He has been transferred from his current posting as head of the Pathology Department where his expertise lies to the Health Ministry."
"I can't believe this."
"It is true apparently."
"Does the President know?"
"I don't know - he was asked to deny he is standing up for the presidential elections and apparently he refused..."
"Ah, how the mighty have fallen!"
