About 14 percent of industrial establishment are not member of any industrial associations in Pakistan. This was stated in survey of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Pakistan Manufacturing establishment. In this study-questionnaire survey of 500 local manufacturing establishments was undertaken.
Section two of this questionnaire survey focused on the membership and role of industry association. The result of the survey shows that a number of establishments responded that they were the members of industry associations. 86 percent industrial establishments were found to be member of one or other industrial association.
The details of survey is as follow- 211 replies were received from textile clothing sector, where 88 percent replied in yes and 12 percent in no; Food processing units- out of 71 replies 89 percent said in yes and 11 percent in no. Automobile and parts- out of 39 replies 85 percent replied in yes and 15 percent in no. Electronics- out of 14 answers 93 percent replied in yes and 7 percent in no. Chemicals- 57 replies 86 percent in yes and 14 percent in no. Housing related- 102 replies 80 percent yes and 20 percent no. IT- 6 replies 50 percent yes and 50 no. Others 9 answer 75 percent in yes and 25 percent in no.
Total number of replies received comes to 508 out of them 86 percent responded in positive and said that they are members of industrial associations whereas 14 percent replied in negative and said that they are not a members of any industrial association.
Those who replied that they are not members of any industrial association had various reasons due to which they have not any association.
Half of them responded that they did no effort for membership as there is no industrial association relevant to their business and if there is any the role of such association very limited.
The surveyors asked types of services that industrial associations are providing to their members. 77 percent of the respondents mentioned that they receive some kind of services from their associations.
In the textile sector, 83 percent of the respondents said that they receive services from the association, while only 70 percent of them got some services in the automobile and the chemical sectors.
A variety of services were provided by the industrial associations, including those major services such as providing information about domestic policy and regulations, domestic markets information, delivering collective views on the policy to the government.
The study asked the establishments how they assess the importance of the industrial associations, and how they were satisfied with the services of the associations. 72 percent of the respondents consider it as very important. Over 90 percent of the respondent have regarded industrial associations as important organisations. Concerning the level of satisfaction, 80 percent of the respondents mentioned that they were satisfied with the services of the industrial associations.
