The Senate Standing Committee on Narcotics Control underlined the need for chalking out viable strategies to check drugs trafficking and launching awareness campaigns. The Standing Committee met at parliament House. Kalsoom Perveen presided over the meeting.
It was pointed that some chemicals in the registered list of Import Policy Order were being used for the preparation of various illicit drugs and that those involved in the misuse of these substances must be taken to task.
The Committee recommended that the Ministries of Commerce and Narcotics Control must closely co-ordinate. It was also recommended that NOC must be issued by the Ministry of Narcotics Control for the import of precursor chemicals.
The Committee called for including material in the textbooks focusing on the socio-economic aspects of the use of narcotics and the members were of the view that Anti-Narcotics Force must be allocated adequate funds to arrest the rising trend, which was posing threat to the society and the economy.
Earlier, the representatives of the MoNC and senior officials of ANF informed the Committee about the progress on the recommendations made by the Committee. The Committee assured its support to the Ministry in overcoming various difficulties and hoped that more efforts would be made to check this social evil appropriately.
