The anti-government movement announced by 'National Action Committee of Pakistan Bar Council' on Sunday was doomed to fail as it did not enjoy public support, said the Minister for Political Affairs, Engr Amir Muqam. Talking to APP here on Monday, he said.
The movements are generally launched with the active support of masses, while the lawyers' call for agitation lacks public support completely. He said that on the other hand President Pervez Musharraf has overwhelming public support.
The Minister said in the past the lawyers' community had launched similar movement but that was altogether a different matter. "In their previous movement, hundreds of court cases were delayed with the result that poor people suffered and underwent pangs of running from pillar to post," he said.
Amir Muqam urged the lawyers' community to concentrate on their prime duty, which is to provide justice to the masses and help in speedy dispensation of their cases.
"The people would no longer tolerate another call for such movement," he added. The Minister said the previous so-called movements, whether by the lawyers' community or any other political party, miserably failed to bring people on the streets.
In reply to a question about Nawaz Sharif's statement regarding assurance to US over war on terror, he said he (Nawaz) was issuing statements which are beyond apprehension of anyone. "On which basis he claims to be the future premier of the country? He deserted the countrymen in the past and would not do anything better in the future," he added.
