IHI demands immediate announcement of polls schedule

14 Sep, 2007

The blatant violation of the law of the land by present regime is all about pre-poll rigging which will erode public confidence in the forthcoming elections. This was stated by Sarwar Bari at a news briefing by Insani Haqooq Ittehad (IHI), here on Thursday.
He said, "it is the duty of civil society to direct the government for the betterment of the country, therefore we demand immediate announcement of schedule for the election as delay in this respect will create doubts about the fairness of the process".
He said that we demand from the government to provide level playing field to all the stakeholders for the promotion of democracy in the country. In addition to this all exiled and detained leaders should be given the permission to participate in the elections, he added.
He said that lawlessness being sponsored by the government is engulfing the society. Barricade of Sindh High Court premises, siege of the twin cities and arrest of political workers was engineered by none other but the present regime. He said, "the organs of the state are fighting with each other whereas the regime and its supporters are busy in curbing rights of the people. IHI strongly condemn this blatant use of force by the state and non-state actors."
