16 Sep, 2007

President General Pervez Musharraf has appointed six additional judges of the Sindh High Court on vacant posts for a period of one-year from the date they take oath of their office. They are: Arshad Siraj, Syed Mehmood Alam Rizvi, Abdul Rehaman Farooq Pirzada, Abdul Rasheed Kalwar, Zafar Ahmed Khan Sherwani, and Salman Ansari.
According to another notification issued on Saturday, the President has appointed Justice M. Javed Buttar, judge, Supreme Court, as chairman of the Central Zakat Council for a period of three years with immediate effect. Meanwhile, the prime minister has appointed former Justice Mohammad Ajmal Mian, principal secretary, Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights.
Sources told Business Recorder that these appointments follow an important meeting between Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and the Chief of Staff of the President, Lieutenant General Hamid Javed (Retd), in the Supreme Court Building on Friday.
Supreme Court Registrar Dr Faqir Hussain confirmed that matters relating to appointment of new judges were discussed during the meeting. Political analysts say it seems that working relationship between the Executive and the Judiciary has been restored which had been strained after filing a reference against the Chief Justice on March 9, 2007.
