JUI senior leader gunned down

Some unidentified assailants gunned down Maulana Hassan Jan, a top religious cleric and leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), in Wazir Bagh area here just after the Iftar time, police said on Saturday.
"Some unidentified gunmen opened fire on Maulana injured him critically who later succumbed to his injuries in Lady Reading Hospital" a police official told.
According to details Maulana Hassan Jan was going to Sharifabad Mosque No 2 for offering Maghrab prayers after the Iftar, at a Nikah ceremony of son one of the party leader at Wazir Bagh when some assailants targeted him with gun fire. He received several bullet rounds.
Nazim Peshawar City, Haji Ghulam Ali told that Maulana was invited for the Nikah ceremony. "A man came this after noon and took Maulana along with him at Wazir Bagh where he was killed after Iftar" he added. Maulana Hassan Jan, a top cleric and religious personality got fame after defeating late Awami National Party (ANP) leader Abdul Wali Khan in the general elections of 1990 from his home town district Charsadda. President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz have strongly condemned the murder of Maulana Hassan Jan.
