Chile's resurgent Fernando Gonzalez left his dismal summer season behind on Sunday, defeating Spain's Tommy Robredo to win the China Open, his first title in two years. The world number seven defeated third seed Robredo 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at the Beijing tennis centre, raising a trophy for the first time since November 2005 in Basel.
"It's great to finally win a title," said the 27-year-old second seed. "I think I can still improve my game but I'm so happy to return to my best." Gonzalez and Robredo are fighting for one of five places remaining in the eight-man season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai in November. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and US Open finalist Novak Djokovic have already qualified.
