Hearing of three NAB references adjourned

The hearing of three NAB references against Irshad Ahmed Shaikh, Abdul Hakeem Makhdoom, Pir Bux Solangi and Abdul Sattar Mandokhel was adjourned till October 22, 2007 by Accountability Court No I at the request of junior defence counsel.
The accused were office holders in Port Qasim and were charged with misappropriating Rs 168.81 million through misuse of authority and corrupt practices. The hearing in Reference No 15/2005 in Accountability Court No II against Syed Iqbal Kazmi and others was adjourned till October 2, 2007 at the request of defence counsel.
According to details, from 1998 to 2000, the KW&SB's water and conservancy bills amounting to Rs 31.626 million, deposited in Haidri branch of the Habib Bank Ltd (HBL) was not credited to KW&SB account and embezzled by accused Syed Iqbal Kazmi, ex-cashier in the HBL branch in connivance with accused Muhammad Amin Quresh, officer in-charge, Utility Counter and accused Abdul Ghani Mansori, inspector, KW&SB.
According to the prosecution, the accused while holding public offices misused their authority, committed criminal breach of trust, and dishonestly and fraudulently misappropriated the amount.
The hearing of Reference No 16/2005 against Younus Dalia, facing charges of misuse of authority, was adjourned till October 18, 2007 by the Accountability Court No IV. According to details the accused as president of the Habib Bank Limited illegally sanctioned loan in favour of the Schon Group. The main reference against the Group has already been withdrawn by PGA u/s 31-8, NAO, 1999.
The hearing in Reference No 21/2007 was adjourned till October 3, 2007 by the Accountability Court No V. The reference is against Muhammad Akram Nadeem, an operation theater technician, on charge of accumulating assets beyond his known sources of income.
The accused had worked as Operation Theater Technician (BPS-9) at Government Qatar Hospital, Orangi Town, from 1984 to 2003. It was alleged in the reference that on the basis of investigation report during his service from 1985 to 2003, he received an amount of Rs 634,194 as salary whereas the accused, as per declaration, purchased one plot in 1999 and also got three plots regularised in Katchi Abadi from the KDA.
It was further alleged that in 1996 the accused purchased two plots near Safari Park for Rs 146,000. The accused carried out construction on these five plots by spending Rs 4.620 million beyond his known sources of income.
Further, he spent Rs 90,000 on the purchase of a Suzuki van and Rs 90,000 on performance of Haj. Moreover, the accused, while being a non-qualified, practiced as a qualified doctor in his own hospital, known as Hussain Medical Centre. Thus he accumulated assets beyond his known sources of income to the tune of Rs 4.515 million through corruption and corrupt practices.
