Five traffic courts to be established in Sindh

21 Sep, 2007

Sindh government has planned to establish five special traffic courts in the province to handle the growing number of traffic related cases, Business Recorder learnt here on Thursday. Sources in the Sindh Law Department said the decision had been taken following the directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan to resolve traffic problems in Karachi.
They said the Sindh Transport and Labour Department, in an official letter, asked the provincial Law Department to take necessary steps to establish traffic courts in Sindh. It may be pointed out that the proposed plan was prepared two years ago and an official notice was also issued on October 2 2005, but the project was put in the cold storage due to indifferent attitude of the concerned officials.
The project is under process after the apex court took serious notice of the traffic mess in the metropolis. The sources said that function of the court would be defined after consultation with experts. The appointment of judges for the traffic court would be made in the light of the advice of the judiciary, they added.
They said that establishment of the court for traffic would provide relief to the people in traffic related cases. According to a study, compiled by Indus Motors Limited, around 600 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in Karachi.
The report further said that the traffic accidents were on the rise in the province, especially in Karachi owing to lack of traffic sense among people, who openly violated traffic rules and regulations. The sources hoped that establishment of special traffic courts would help minimise violation of the traffic rules.
