Many are the warning signals for our Army bigwigs not to remain in denial and to wake up. Recent massacre of Army Jawans all over Pakistan, surrender by hundreds of soldiers to ragtag Taliban, Lal Masjid mess, desertion of army personnel on foreign mission, CJP removal and reinstatement.
Supreme Courts' judgement on Nawaz Sharif's return and resultant consternation in ruling party, compromises with militants, flaunting of power by Nawaz Sharif and PML-N/APDM, Benazir and (surprisingly) Chaudhry Group, threats by US leaders/think-tanks of attack on Pakistan territory and their hints about hazards of nuclear weapons in the hands of an unstable state.
Collapse of bridge built by Army organisation, failure of DHA authorities to overcome rain havoc, all point to the vulnerability of a highly over-extended set-up.
It also makes a mockery of rhetorical claims of Pakistan's military invincibility. It is high time for our Army, brass to heed the advice, emanating from all well-meaning quarters, to lower their power bench-marks, extricate the armed forces from extra--curricular activities and return to their core function of internal and external security.
Their active co-operation in bringing about a fully democratic civilian political set-up will ensure, the country's integrity, security, and avoidance of nightmarish instability which is staring us in the face. This would also restore armed forces' respect and dignity in public perception.
