Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) Vice President Ali Ahmed Kurd said he would tear the nomination papers of President General Pervez Musharraf. "The candidature of Musharraf is illegal and unjustified under any law and being a polling agent of former Justice Wajeehuddin, I have right to check the nomination papers and I would tear them off", he said.
While addressing a meeting of Rawalpindi District Bar Association held here on Wednesday. The meeting was presided over by Rawalpindi District Bar Association President Khalid Ismael Abbasi, while Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Muneer Malik and Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) Vice-President Ali Ahmed Kurd were chief guests. The meeting was attended by a large number of lawyers of twin cities.
The lawyers reiterated their resolve to use all out efforts to block re-election of President General Pervez Musharraf from present parliament and decided to hold countrywide strike on Thursday (today) and a big protest demonstration in front of Election Commission on September 29.
"How can a person be allowed to play with the future of 160 million people and this is the reason that lawyers have launched a massive movement", said Kurd. When nations decide to live with freedom and attain the basic rights, no military dictator can stand in front of them, he said, adding the people have decided to live with freedom. Addressing the gathering, Muneer A. Malik said the stance of legal fraternity regarding re-election of Musharraf from present assemblies was unchanged and every person wearing black coat would resist this move by tooth and nail.
"We would not leave the field open for Musharraf and use every forum to block his re-election", he added. Malik was of the view that every popular movement gave birth to a leader and lawyers' movement supported by the people produced Justice Iftikhar in first phase and former Justice Wajeehuddin in the second.
