In a rare move the City Council Lahore adopted a condemnation resolution on Wednesday against the forceful deportation of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to Saudi Arabia by the government just hours after he landed at Islamabad Airport from a seven years exile on September 10.
The resolution, which was adopted by the house, termed the government move as illegal and unconstitutional. The council session, which was called after an interval of four month, was presided over by Sohail Mahmood Butt.
Council members Majid Zahoor tabled the condemnation resolution. Soon after moving of the resolution the opposition's members started severe sloganeering in favour of the resolution. In a surprised move, within seconds the chair declared the resolution passed unanimously that stunned the treasury members.
During the session opposition members came down hard on government for arrest of opposition's workers and leaders especially the city council members, and demanded their immediate release.
In a retaliatory move the a treasury member attempted to move a resolution in favour of General Musharraf, but failed to get it passed as the opposition members sprung on their feet raising slogans "Go Musharraf Go" and 'shame shame' which turned the house into fish market.
The chair tried to pacify the opposition members and control the situation but the opposition members continued their onslaught that left the chair with no option but to adjourn the session for an indefinite period.
