01 Oct, 2007

The leaders of National Transport Ittehad (NTI), an alliance of 16 transport organisations, have condemned the police torture on journalists, lawyers and other members of civil society in Karachi and Islamabad on Saturday.
"This is worst example of state terrorism and we severely condemn it," Salim Khan Bangash, Raja Muhammad Rafique, Nazir Hussain Atmanzai, Haji Syed Rauf Khan and others said in a statement on Sunday.
"General Musharraf has turned the country into a Police State to deprive the citizens of their basic rights at force," they contended demanding immediate release of all the arrested people.
"We would not sit as silent spectators on such a brutal action against journalists and lawyers," they said adding that a meeting of NTI has been called on Monday (today) to evolve strategy for protest against police torture.
