The entire project aims to generate about 20000 jobs with total factory space exceeding 1416000 Sqft. Garment cities are clusters of stitching and sewing units grouped together to produce specialisation garments for exports and provide an opportunity to small and medium entrepreneurs to develop value added clothing and accessories. The stitching units may operate under one roof, or in one locality sharing common facilities such as training centre, testing laboratories, ware houses, transport and logistic services, etc.
The concept of garment cities is a departure from the vertically integrated supply chain to horizontal manufacturing structures required by fast changing fashions and designer lines. Garment cities slice the value chain, including specialisation and volumes enterprises.
The marketing process is facilitated by the cluster methodology with replicates economics of scale through voluntary associations and export consortia. In Pakistan the Garment Cities in Faisalabad, Lahore and Karachi would give a new lease of life to garment export and attract manufacturers who do not wish be bogged down by the large production system and management constraints of vertically integrated manufacturing units.
