05 Oct, 2007

The Kissan Board Pakistan (KPB) has urged the Punjab government to stop closing canals till October 31 in the area of Dhundi Estate (District Rajanpur) to help the farmers sowing different crops in the area presently.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, KBP President Sardar Zafar Hussain Khan Advocate said 50,000 families are attached with farming in this area while there is a fear of 1,20,000 acre land becoming barren. He said canal water is being used in the area for irrigation as underground water here is not feasible for use. He also complained that only 1300 cusec water is running in the canal in the area instead of approved 2000 cusecs.
He said wheat sowing is also about to start so the government should not close canal till October 31 and also ensure provision of water to the farmers having land at the tail.
