GCU English debates conclude

The Debating Society of GC University Lahore organised Annual Internal English Debates Competition 2007 here on Wednesday at the Bokhari Auditorium of the varsity, which was participated by the varsity orators.
The topic of the competition was "Destiny lies not in the stars, it lies in our hands". Mustafa Haider bagged first position, Asim Lodhi stood second while Sheroze Shaheen attained third position respectively. The debaters demonstrated their expertise at the best of their excellence and earned appreciation from the participants over their logical arguments.
The chief guest of the ceremony Chairperson Philosophy Department of GCU Professor Mirza Athar Baig while speaking on the occasion deliberated the relationship between the staged events, which become extra-ordinary but it has an ordinary counter part in real life. He said, "stage in a way magnifies our ordinary experiences".
He also pointed out excellent career for the debaters in political arena and legal professions adding that a good debater can only be excellent politician as debates provide them faculty of analytical mind as well as lingual command. He said, debate starts with the beginning of life and when we transfer the difference of opinion into either-or, we give this debate the form of a stage show and make it a memorable event of performance.
He also said that life is much more complex than mutually exclusive difference of opinion. He stressed that debates should be gray-zones of life that would make society more tolerant of other's point of view. Later, Professor Mirza Athar Baig gave away prizes to the winners of the competition. The adjudicators of the event included Shah Zeb Khan, Azhar Iftikhar and Sohaib Arshad Qureshi.
