20 Oct, 2007

The Kisan Board Pakistan has urged the government to immediately announce support the wheat prices. Central President Sardar Zafar Hussain Khan said in a statement here on Friday that he feared that the crushing season might never start in Sindh on October 20 and November 1 in the Punjab since the government announced it.
He said out of 75 sugar mills only one sugar mill had stared working. "The delay in it will make negative impact on sowing of wheat crop," he said. He said ideal season of sowing wheat in Barani area started on October 20 while in the "canal-fed" areas the season started on November 1.
He also criticised the government for failing to announce the support prices of wheat. He described last year's support price insufficient because of manifold increase in the prices of agricultural inputs. He said this year the support price should be fixed at Rs 525 per maund.
