The Karachi carnage of October 18

22 Oct, 2007

The bombing at the procession of Pakistan Peoples Party on October 18, 2007, was an unprecedented tragedy, which left hundreds killed and wounded. The PPP and government should not have planned/allowed such big procession/rally and party gathering consuming estimatedly 18 hours, particularly in view of the general security situation prevalent in the country.
TO AVOID SUCH UGLY INSTANCES IN FUTURE DURING THE POLITICAL ACTIVITIES I WOULD SUGGEST:
a) To announce the general election schedule immediately.
b) Put a complete ban on the processions and public meetings.
c) The election contestant should buy the time on TV channels.
d) TV channels to arrange political debates.
e) The President has become a party by supporting some political parties and getting involved in understanding with PPP. As such his neutrality is questionable and the elections in his presence will never be termed as free and fair. So he should voluntarily step down to defuse the tense situation in the country.
f) An interim impartial Government at the centre and provinces be formed for holding the general elections.
I hope the above steps will arrest the deteriorating situation.
