National Assembly body to forward four recommendations to EC

26 Oct, 2007

As a follow up decision, the National Assembly Parliamentary Affairs Standing Committee on Thursday made a second request to the Election Commission (EC) to ensure that names of dead persons have been deleted from the revised voter's list, 2007. In addition, voters must be asked to produce the National Identity card at the time of voting.
The Committee, which met on Thursday with Riaz Fatyana in the Chair, also expressed the hope that the Election Commission would eliminate rigging in the forthcoming general election. The Committee also decided to forward the following recommendations:
1. After conclusion of the polling the presiding officer should ensure election results; and in the report he should mention the cancelled votes and also hand over a copy of the result bearing his signature and stamp to the polling agents.
2. Assistant returning officers as well as law enforcing personnel must collect election result and other relevant materials from the presiding officer in front of polling agents to ensure that no person could manipulate election results, thereafter.
3. The EC should ensure the authenticity of B A degrees by those contesting election to a National Assembly seat.
4. And, in addition, the EC should obtain the equivalence of certificates issued by religious institutions (madrassas).
