Jirga held to restore peace in Mohmand Agency

31 Oct, 2007

Haleemzai tribe leaders have opposed ongoing military operation and bloodshed in Mohmand Agency and called for joint efforts to restore peace to the area. They made this call at a Jirga held in Chandah area. It was attended by a large number of people, including religious scholars and notables of the area.
Addressing the Jirga, the tribal leaders announced that they are Mulims and support Jihad, which they inherited from their ancestors who had fought against the British occupiers. They, however, said they would make hectic efforts for restoration of peace to the tribal region. They said there should be a ban on the sale and purchase of heroin and wine in their area.
The tribal leaders said those found involved in such crimes would be punished according to Islamic laws on the decrees issued by competent religious scholars only. They took oath on the Holy Qur'an that Ulema, notables and youth would continue their struggle for peace, saying they are bitterly opposed to military operation and bloodshed in Mohmand Agency.
